Validation Authority - Case Studies

U.S. Marine Corps
US Marine Corps relies on the Tumbleweed Valicert Validation Authority® (VA) to distinguish friend from foe in real-time and ensure the security of mission-critical communications among its force of more than 40,000 personnel world-wide. With its innovative Repeater-Responder™ architecture, the VA enables the Marine Corps to support the system-wide use of Common Access Cards (CAC) for establishing the trusted relationship on which their operations depend. The VA's ability to validate the status of digital certificates in real time ensures that revoked credentials cannot be used for secure email, smart card login, web access, or other electronic transactions.

Defense Logistics Agency
The U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) deployed the Tumbleweed Validation Authority® (VA) to provide enterprise-wide digital certificate validation to more than 30,000 users. The VA validates the status of digital certificates in real time using the open standard Online Certificate Status Protocol (OCSP, RFC 2560), ensuring that revoked credentials cannot be used for secure email, smart card login, web access, wireless, VPN, or other electronic transactions that might compromise mission-critical DLA infrastructure.

Identrus
The Tumbleweed Valicert Validation Authority™ is used to run the Identrus Root responder, which offers validation services for Identrus issued digital certificates worldwide since 1998. Identrus members rely on the Validation Authority for trusted, non-repudiable electronic transactions that value millions of dollars every day.

U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) Public Key Infrastructure (PKI)
The U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) Program Management Office (PMO) selected the Tumbleweed Validation Authority® (VA) to provide world-wide digital certificate validation to more than 1.3 million users. With support for numerous widely adopted security standards including the Online Certificate Status Protocol (OCSP, RFC 2560), the VA ensures that revoked PKI credentials cannot be used for secure email, smart card login, web access, wireless, VPN, or other electronic transactions that might compromise mission-critical DoD infrastructure.

United States Air Force
The United States Air Force (USAF) relies on Tumbleweed’s Valicert Validation Authority™ solution to ensure the validity of Department of Defense (DoD) Common Access Card digital certificates.  Air Force deployment of the Valicert Validation Authority is part of DoD’s Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) to secure mission critical applications such as email, web server access, network access, and system login with digital certificate verification. Specifically, Air Force uses the Validation Authority to protect its infrastructure against revoked or expired digital certificates.

Wide Area Work Flow/CACI
The Department of Defense (DoD) Wide Area Workflow (WAWF), an online application for invoice creation, receipt processing and payment-related documentation via the Internet for Defense contractors and DoD personnel, relies on the Tumbleweed Valicert Validation Authority (VA) solution to ensure that expired or revoked digital certificates cannot be used to perform transactions in the system. WAWF was developed by CACI, a leading DoD contractor, utilizing the VA Toolkit, taking advantage of the robust functionality offered in the VA toolkit to reduce development time and cost, increase quality, and respond quickly to customer needs.
